Update 12-1-15
It’s coming up on 4 years that I’ve been using this Aprilaire system. I’m still overall happy with it but these canisters are still pricy. They still average close to 60 bucks a piece. I tried installing an in line filter to cut down on the sediment and that doesn’t seemed to have helped extend the life of the canister by a significant amount. I also tried cleaning the canister with vinegar and even CLR that seemed to help a bit.
As I mentioned in my previous review, if you’re starting out new with this system, get the 220V hookup so you can generate steam more efficiently. I wish I would have done that.
Original Review.
I’ve had this unit for 2 winters and overall I have to say we like it. It does a decent job of keeping the humidity up in the house during the winter months. There are two drawbacks that I can see with the unit.
First, it’s expensive to run, essentially you’re boiling water to make steam with electricity. That takes a decent amount of electric. Here in Western Pennsylvania, electric rates are pretty average for the country so I am guessing you’re looking at $25 a month to run the unit.
Next, the canisters are ridiculously expensive. They run between $60 and $80 each. The first time I replaced one, I could help but feel ripped off when I saw a plastic bottle with basically a piece of metal and two wires. Aprilaire is careful to seal the canisters so you can’t open them up and clean them and use them over again. I have city water and 1 canister lasts me an entire winter, your mileage may vary.
A word of caution, trying to run the unit for an extended amount of time with a dirty canister would use a lot more electricity than the unit normally uses. The unit would have to heat the dirty elements in the canister and well as heating the water.
This year when the warning light came on the replace the canister, it was close to the end of the heating season so I just turned my unit off. I didn’t see any purpose in installing a fresh canister to let it sit dirty all summer and hope it was clean enough to use next winter.
If you have especially hard water, I would think twice about getting this unit until someone comes out with an aftermarket canister that fits.
If you’re just getting your unit installed, talk to the installer about hooking up 220 to the unit. This extra power gives better steam generation and in the long run could save you some money. If they have to run a whole bunch of wiring to get the 220 hooked up, it’s probably not worth it but if the power is near buy, I’d certainly consider it.

Works fine

Works great, easy to install. The worst part is cleaning out the gunk from tubing, but that’s really nothing to do with the canister. Swap out the old, clean tubing and insert the new one. Pretty simple.

Manufacturer’s replacement. High quality and price reflects it. Price increases have been over past three years have outpaced inflation. I would buy a knock-off if I could find one with same quality. But the canister works as advertised and provides humidity for one year in a 2500 square foot residence with a forced air HVAC system.

I’ve used many AprilAire Steam Humidifier’s in my homes over the years, and this unit is by far the best unit. It keeps the humidity level within 2 to 3 percent of the setting. It’s a steamer, so the furnace fan has to be set up to turn on when humidity is needed. It works.
This filter is easy to change out, a couple of screws, pull up and out, clean up the connections a bit, and reverse to install the new one. Easy. It takes about 5 minutes to change and your good to go for another year. I highly recommend if you live in the dry West and need humidity added to the air. I stick with the factory made replacements because I want to help keep this American company in business.

This canister matched the original exactly and was straightforward to put in. The instructions were easy to follow. If you are comfortable with minor mechanical household upkeep, this should be easy to install. You will need a Phillips screwdriver, and a small flat screw driver (maybe a jewelers type), to get a rubber O-ring out. You need to turn off the power and shut of the water to the humidifier unit, so know where these controls are before you start.
One of the steps involves confirming that the electrode wires are OK. The electrode wires are really just two wires that connect to the top of the canister. It’s easy to check these wires. What you are really checking is that they are fitting snugly, and that they have ‘O’ shaped rather than ‘D’ shaped connector ends. That is easy to do, and I’d suggest you do that before installing the new canister. ‘D’ shaped connectors won’t fit the new canister (and need to be replaced). Loosely fitting connectors should be replaced as well. That is a good thing to know before you get half-way through the job and have to order them. Eventually, the electrode wires will probably need to be replaced (mine did not).
Also – keep the old canister as a reference when you put the new canister in. At one point the instructions said to make sure there was a strainer attached. Looking at the old one, it’s just a plastic piece that fits on the bottom. It was there, but I’m guessing it can fall off and that’s why they had you check.
All in all, it is an easy job. My indicator light was not calling for replacement after almost two years, but I decided to do it anyway (mine sits downstream of a water softener). Judging from the amount of solid gunk in the old canister I probably should have done it sooner. I’m not sure what the unit uses to judge when it should be replaced, but it is seems to error on the bad side.
All in all a pretty easy job and the instructions were reasonably good!
