I own two of these, and can’t reccomend them enough. Like other “True HEPA” products – the labeling of which is an industry agreement – this really does meet HEPA standards and it really gets the trick done.
I used to work in a beat-up, old, bank-owned (and thus poorly-maintained) office building. I have allergies to almost everything outside or inside, especially mold, plus allergy-induced asthma, and so after going through a box of Kleenex a day my first week on the job, I decided to purchase my second one of these for my office. I brought it in, set it up, and left it running all night after I left. When I came in the next day and sat down, I was breathing clear and free all day. I didn’t have allergy problems at work for the next year before I left the company.
My first one was purchased for a crappy, mold-ridden, graduate-student-affordable apartment with a miserable landlord who didn’t clean the place before I moved in, and it did the trick there so I could not nearly choke to death in my sleep from a constricted/inflamed airway.
Buy two, they’re worth every penny. Remember that it’s good for a single large bedroom, it won’t do a whole house.
Update @ 4 years of ownership: The first one has now been running almost continuously (at a low level) for about 4 years, the second one for about 2.5 years. They’re both doing great, and continuing to REALLY help me with my allergies.
I think, to an extent, they’re almost too good, in that I live in a clean zone and can occasionally struggle on high-allergen days outside. I’ve noticed a similar thing with my fiance who moved in with me a few months back; she’s been struggling with her allergies a little more after moving in, despite it being cleaner, possibly because these are so effective but she bikes to work so gets exposed to other things outdoors, and its Florida so there’s not even a winter to eliminate the allergens outside. I think its a stuck-between-two-extremes sort of deal.
All that being said, 1) I’m not a medical professional, so who knows if that is right 2) I’d much rather have such a situation since my normal allergies are so terrible. These purifiers have been a true miracle for me, and are probably one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I’ve even loaned them out to people to let them experience it and it’s usually convinced them to buy their own. Well worth every penny.

I have owned Holmes air purifiers before and they have all lasted a lot longer than this one. This one completely stopped working in under a year. I can’t give more than 1 star because of the quality. I bought a Holmes air purifier in a store in 2014 and it lasted 10 years. These things are expensive and for it to not last a year is crazy! I will add that on the highest setting it is fairly noisy, which is actually what I was looking for so it could double as a white noise machine. This ran overnight every night and lasted maybe 8 months. Probably won’t be buying Holmes brand anymore. Quality went way down.

A little big and a little noise than others but it does a good job and the white noise helps me sleep without getting woke up by the kids. I know that sounds silly, but I’m a light sleeper

It works because when I don’t have it on, my allergies are worse. So I have it on all the time. Unless it’s a small room and you have it right next to you, it is quiet enough. The fan sound is a good white noise that helps me sleep, too. It’s portable from one place to another. Take it to your air BNB.

They are quiet and do the job. The ionizer clumps the dust, pollen and debris, so more can be collected by the filter. It’s ragweed season and my home is a safe space👃🏻👃🏻👃🏻👃🏻

It’s a Holmes, long standing model, low volume, a bit noisy, but works well and the price is right. one cleans about 150 square feet. I own two, one is 10 years old I give it 5 stars factoring in the price

I have used Holmes air purifiers for years. My last one stopped working after about 5 years of use so I bought this one as a replacement. My only issue is that it is louder than my older one.
I had to move it away from the bed and across the room because of that so I could sleep. This one also has a washable pre-filter while the old one had disposable ones so I will see how that works out after awhile.
Does the job, though.

My husband was VERY skeptical about this purchase, but after using this air purifier for three months now, he’s sold and I am confident in its abilities to do what it claims to do.
The both of us were having problems with feeling ‘stuffy’ when we woke up in the morning. Our room isn’t very big so its easy to keep clean and prevent dust from accumulating. Leaving a window open to assist with air circulation didn’t help and isn’t practical when its really hot or really cold outside.
This baby solved our problem. Although it was a bit bigger than I though it’d be, we had no problem finding a place for it that satisfied both the required operating clearance and aesthetics of our room.
We kept it on high for the first week or so and the both of us noticed a dramatic difference in our breathing. We also tried out the optional ionizer. It does an ok job of reducing odors, but don’t expect a miracle. All in all we luv it and it has certainly improved our sleeping experience.
PROS:
– Works very well dispite its size
– True HEPA filter is a big plus
– Quiet on lower settings
– Washable pre-filter — Helps extend the life of the HEPA filter — Haven’t tried to wash it yet though
– Ionizer
– Ease of setup and simple controls
CONS:
– Highest setting is quite loud
– The true HEPA filter replacements (HAPF300D-U2(D) according to Holmes’ website) cost more than half the price of the item itself. — Granted its a two pack and the manual states that on average, the HEPA filters need replacement every 10-12 months.
– Dust magnet — It IS designed to pull and filter dust, but dust will also collect all over whatever you place near it. After a quick online search into the matter, this is a normal though unpleasant feature of quite a few air purifiers… I usually just take a dry swiffer sheet and wipe up the dust once a week.
