Since June, the weather in Toronto has been unbearable, especially if you live in a home with no AC. My house is nearly 100 years old and lacks central AC. I got the air conditioner today and set it up myself after watching a YouTube video. It was fairly simple and straightforward, as long as you have the right tools.
For reference, I’m a girl, and while girls can certainly do the job, I’m also 110 lbs and carried the AC myself. So yes, it’s very doable if you are as determined as I was after suffering in the heat.
The AC reduced my living room temperature from 85°F (about 29°C) to 82°F in less than 10 minutes. I am now sitting comfortably in my house. This is a great buy, and it’s also very quiet!

OK folks, it can be done!
I had to overcome two different issues for installing this 8,000 BTU unit:
1. The window opening wasn’t tall enough – 11 1/2 in.
2. The window was too wide – 52 in.
1. To overcome the 11 1/2 in. opening (with my bottom sash lifted all the way up):
I have tilt out vinyl windows and the sashes are removable. Removing the bottom sash allowed for 14 1/2 in. I installed the unit on the bracket and then carefully lined it up and reinserted the bottom sash from above the unit at an angle, slowly tilting it back as I lowered it into the a/c opening and then snapped it back in place in the window track once it was low enough in the 3 in. a/c gap. Then I just lowered the bottom sash into place, using foam all across the bottom which provided a seal all across the window opening.
Moral of the story: see what’s involved with removing the lower sash if needed to provide the extra height to overcome the 13 3/4 in. opening they recommend. Typically, the upper window sash alone sits higher in the window frame.
2. 52 in. wide: I did not center the unit. I placed it (in my case) to the right allowing for the provided solid foam insert with the shorter bracket fully extended. That left too much room on the left, correct? So I extended the provided support bracket out as far as allowed, then I cut a piece of PVC trim board (purchased at Home Depot, $20, 1 in. x 4 in. x 8 ft., actual size 3/4 in. x 3 1/2 in.) to fit from the end of the support bracket to the end of the interior window opening. I secured the slide out bracket to the board (with screws provided) and to the end of the interior window opening. This board is entirely on the interior. I cut a second piece to fit inside the window track (about 20 in.). This takes the place of the block of foam provided which wasn’t long enough. I wrapped expandable 3/4 in. foam all around it (from Home Depot). This board fits inside the fold down plastic bracket on the a/c unit, all the way to inside the lower sash track. The PVC trim board is a good product as it is weatherproof and can be exposed to the outside. SO: one side has the provided foam block, and the other side has the foam wrapped PVC trim board. They are both waterproof, and provide 100% protection from the outside. See photos. Short side is foam board provided. Long side is PVC trim board wrapped in expandable foam.
Just to be clear, on top of these 2 inserts, and along the inside of the a/c opening, I extended a length of expandable 3/4 in foam from end to end of the window track (50 in.). When you lower the bottom sash onto this foam, it provides the needed insulation and weatherproofing from the outside elements (wind, rain, bugs, etc.)
As for the openings at the very bottom of the unit, I purchased E/Fusing 900 Moldable Silicone Putty – sold on Amazon – for $17 and used it by pushing it into all of the gaps, both inside and outside below the unit. See photo.
The unit is very quiet. It does make a known “chirping” sound when the compressor kicks in. It’s not very noticeable and doesn’t last very long (under a minute). Overall, it’s much quieter than a standard window unit.
I live in Florida. It’s wet and humid here, especially outside. I’ve read the comments about mold inside the units. Our indoor humidity is usually in the 50’s. I run this unit only a night (to keep bedroom cool). In the morning I run the fan (using the timer) for 30 min. as a precaution to dry out the evaporator coil which is just behind the filter that you’ll clean out (often is best). So I don’t anticipate a mold issue any more than any other window unit, but I’ll keep a close eye on it.
As to energy savings, running the whole house a/c to keep the bedroom cool meant cooling the entire house throughout the night. Now, I can keep the house temp higher, and use the efficient Midea to cool the only room needing to be cooled at night – the bedroom where it’s installed. There is a definite savings in energy use – and it means the whole house a/c gets a break during the night hours. After all, in Florida, they darn near run all the time – especially in the summer months. Getting any window unit or interior portable a/c with an “inverter” is key to maximizing your energy savings.
One last thing, the price for this unit changes on Amazon almost daily. Follow it if you have the time, and purchase it when the price is comfortable for you. Yesterday it was $379. Today it’s $359 plus a $40 discount ($319). And I’ve seen it as low as $249 plus a $30 discount ($219) in the last month (Sep. 2023). Crazy right?
So good luck with your install. As to the extra expense, I spent $40 at Home Depot. Best wishes everyone.

This was surprisingly easy to install and barely takes up any space inside the room. Looks way more modern than other window AC units we’ve had in the past. Keeps the room cold with fresh air and isnt loud at all, which is great for sleeping! Definitely recommend this.

This is a fantastic product for two reasons. It is QUIET, and it is energy efficient.
FIVE STAR PART: The unit installs in classic vertical sash windows, but unlike conventional window units, it separates the compressor, motors, and fans from the controls by allowing the lower sash to divide these elements. Brilliant: efficient moving components outside and cool, dry air inside. The space for the lower sash is also wide enough to permit a window blind to function in the gap. This allows light blocking, which is not something one would have thought important, but is, and it is very slick. The marketing literature talks about being able to operate the lower slider if you want fresh air, which seems silly. There is already a fan setting to bring in fresh air, and it is a fair bit of effort to make sure everything reseals when moving the sash. I think the marketing team went a little too far in this one and the notion detracts attention from the overall design excellence of the product.
It is very thoughtful to include a remote control for those needing one, and the voice access through Wi-Fi provides even more accessibility options. I am fortunate enough to not need these, and the on-board control layout of the unit is excellent! Although it took me a while to get used to a display that only showed the temperature setting and not the room temperature, it turned out that the unit is so good that there is rarely a difference anyway.
THREE STAR PART: You may have a little effort on your part to get the mounting bracket to work, since it is designed for specific sill configurations. A few people must be lucky, and it all works out, but our outer sill was too big. So, when the unit is installed, we put a conveniently sized brick on top of the sill (shown in the picture) and don’t use the rear angled support arms. We also put a thin piece of rubber between the metal of the mounting bracket and brick to reduce possible vibration transmission. (My calculations show it’s very safe since the majority of load goes through the wall of the house in compression. Plus, the additional load is quite small. But we leave critical decisions of this nature to lawyers; think of this a shared experience from a questionable source.) Once you get the unit positioning sorted out, the mounting bracket is a dream, and next year’s install will be easy-peasy.
I strongly recommend this unit! The price and effort are well worth it but do your homework.

Between the Mill 2 blocks away and the main road right outside my door I live with a constant inflow of dust. Because of this and because I live in a desperately humid area of the country, I tend to buy new window units every year. Two of them are needed as I keep a cool climate in my room for myself and my spouse and the living room for my spoiled pups. This year, my room unit went out right as a heat dome that could only have originated in hell itself settled over my neck of the woods. Between the climate and menopause I was trying to figure out how to squeeze myself into the deepfreeze just to get a decent night of sleep. When local stores were jacking up prices as quick as their fingers could punch in the numbers to gouge the sweltering public, I turned to Amazon in hopes of finding something that wouldn’t send me into debt for the rest of my natural life. While hotflashes and traffic noise take their toll on my sleep, I hoped to find an affordable unit that maybe wouldn’t rumble my window and add to the cacophony I already deal with on a nightly basis. This particular unit, built with the condenser outside looked a bit odd but was supposed to be quiet as well as cooling. Ever the optimist, I took a chance and ordered it. After all, it would at least be cool, right? Two days later it was delivered to my door and my husband and I set out to install it with all the energy of 2 old people who just arrived home after a day working in 106° heat. It came with thorough instructions and a video link to actually show how to install it correctly. All necessary part, plus extras just in case you fumble fingered a screw into the land of lost socks were included. And extra insulating material! Any kind of tape, brick or strips you’d need for installation, all included. It took us about 45 minutes and it was done. Not just done, though, it was done correctly! And my window can still be used, y’know, if I were actually social and wanted to talk to the neighbor. It was so quiet I couldn’t even tell it was on! Except for the fact that my room quickly cooled from blast furnace to habitable environment. I was more impressed than I’ve been with any product I can ever remember buying! I’m old, though, so my memory isn’t what it was. I waited to make sure it wasn’t a fluke to make a review because I have trust issues. But then, my friends, the worst happened. The livingroom unit went out. Same heat dome still baking our neck of the woods, no extra cash to buy another unit because we just replaced the one in the room. So, being the daughter of an inventive father, I decided to poor person our problem into a solution. I cut a hole in the wall between the bedroom and living room, and put a fan in front of it. I figured this would be a temporary solution and while my room would no longer be an ice block, both rooms would at least be livable. I.. was wrong. Not only is my room STILL an iceblock, the livingroom stays about 72°!! The dogs are happy, I’m happy and this wonder of a product has made my life so much better. So, buy it! It’s quiet, it cools beyond expectation and now the electric bill is lower because it’s doing the work of 2 units! It’s compact, attractive to look at and the quality is more than I ever expected, but is what we all deserve. I WILL NEVER use any other unit, this little miracle has put all other (and there have been alot) air conditioner to shame.

This air conditioner is quiet, cools the room quickly, easy to program. I put 4 stars because it took 2 people to install this for me ..It’s very heavy and it took them about an hour to install this air conditioner. I would recommend this air conditioner to anyone.

Pros:
COLD air, good air volume, smart UI design, quiet.
Cons:
Installation is brutal. Bracket mounted outside the window is much too large for the unit.
I purchased this after many publications recommended it. And they were right–it’s a great window unit, keeps the bedroom nice and cold during hot Texas summer (both at night and for naps during the day) to keep the electric bill down from the central AC.
Installation was multiple tiring hours. I read the instructions twice before starting but the schematics are somewhat lacking. It’s tricky to install the U-shapes; the partial schematics were great for the individual steps but better full schematics would have been a welcome addition. If you’re this far, you already know the installation was tricky, so I’ll stop there on it.
As mentioned at the top, the bracket is much too long for the unit. Also–the batting/padding for sealing the window gaps arrived compressed–not a huge deal but it did make custom fitting much harder. The instructions also did not specify how much excess to allow for in fitting the unit. There are some places I wish I’d allowed for more excess material than my measurements had suggested. They did include enough so you have extra for the multiple tries it will take.
After installation, though, wow. It blows a high volume of cold air, it’s almost silent/has good white noise, and has needed no adjustments since install. The seals worked great. I have no complaints about the design or remote, they were both very thoughtfully put together and laid out. Great unit if you’re okay with a tricky install.
