I absolutely love this thing.
Ultrasonic humidifiers require distilled water, lest the droplets evaporate and leave a fine powder of mineral precipitate all over your house and in your lungs. Evaporative humidifiers require new wicks (improperly referred to an filters). And both are susceptible to mold and bacteria growth.
Not this thing. It boils the water, and boiled water is pure and clean. It’s how distilled water is manufactured. The heat in the tank kills the bacteria, but the water itself is not at boiling temperature. It’s thanks to how the electrodes work. Only the water inside the plastic boiler unit reaches boiling point.
Some people find that their vaporizer stops working after a short time. This is caused by white limescale building up on the electrodes, blocking the current. Still better than an ultrasonic humidifier, which would just fling all that limescale into the air. You can descale the unit with vinegar, which takes maybe 15 minutes. But where I live, the water doesn’t have limescale. Nonetheless, I’ve noticed a decrease in output over 2 years of usage, which could be caused by the electrode eroding away. This is what causes the black flakes when you replace the water.
Regardless, this thing is $18. Just add lots of salt to get the output up, and if that doesn’t work, buy a new one. You’ll still save money. The manual says not to add more than 1/2tsp of salt, but I add a tablespoon and it floods the house with humidity. It’s mesmerizing to watch.
The worst thing about this humidifier is that the output decreases as the water level decreases. For that, I know another reviewer mentioned floating the boiler unit in a five gallon bucket. I need to go find that review.

Really not much to break/go wrong on this unit, it makes gurgling noise at night near the bed if you want to put out any good amount of steam but upside is no filter and no residue.
I’m planning to get a whole house humidifier to replace this because it’s just too much hassle keeping it topped up all the time in the winter.

Buen flujo de vapor.

I usually have bronchitis every fall and spring and now I can add dry eyes to the list, so everything there needs moisture.
I used to have a vapoizer as a kid growing up and it helped so much, so I purchased two of these.
After reading the reviews I decided to buy one and try it. I had to add salt quite a few times to get it to really throw out the water, but really how much does a box of salt cost, compared to being sick.
I love it so much now I have one in my bedroom. I put it on for a few hours before bed and another one in my living room where I spend a lot of time.

I could no longer find these locally, so found this one on Amazon. In the winter, I keep it running almost 24/7. It works so much better than the ultrasonic ones, as those ones leave a fine mist of dust and minerals everywhere. This one just shoots out steam. The only problem is, that some of the heating element flakes off and leaves a bit of a mess in the container, I guess that is normal, because I have used a couple of these already, but it is a bit hard to clean it out. I also wish it had a fill port, other than removing the entire heating part to refill it. But that being said, I would certainly purchase it again. it works well.

Very good product and very very good price. I am very happy with the purchase and intend to buy again in the near future. Shipping was on time and the product is great quality. Very happy customer.

I received a defective unit. There is no Amazon return for this item, even though it is a “Prime” item. You have to go through the manufacturer. It’s not like other Amazon purchases. You can’t print a shipping label and send it back in order to get a replacement or refund, which I would be more than willing to do. They will not ship you a new item unless you ship back the old one at your expense first. They will not give you a refund unless you ship back the old one at your expense first. They refused to make an exception and they had no supervisor or manager to speak to. You have to ship it back at your expense, and if the next one is also defective then the same thing applies. If this were a $200 item, I could, maybe, see doing it. But for an $28 item, it probably costs just as much to ship it back as it would to just purchase a new one. I will be purchasing a new one, but it won’t be from Amazon, and it won’t be a Vicks product. What a shame. Is it too much to ask for a company to have just a little integrity?
Update: I finally got it to work. I had to add a lot of salt to the water… two heaping tablespoons, instead of the “pinch” that is recommended in the instructions. Without salt, it did absolutely nothing. I have another of the same unit. It works with no salt, it just does not produce a lot of steam. This new one does not work at all without salt and requires more salt to work properly than what is in the instructions. I am leaving my review at one star because of the poor customer service, but I am able to use the product.

I write this review as I’m ordering this item for literally the tenth time. While it works, it works great, but looking at my order history, these devices have almost exactly a six month lifespan. In their defense, I haven’t been doing the suggested maintenance of submerging the unit in vinegar. In my defense, it’s much cheaper to order replacement units than to order vinegar in the quantities the maintenance would require.

When I was a poor student I used these for humidification in the winter. I have always had VERY dry skin (eczema) and even tho I lived in central Florida, heated winter air was too dry. As I got older and had more $, I tried all kinds of humidifiers. I even had an HVAC with humidification installed. When I moved into a new (to me) home that did not need a new HVAC system, I started again trying different kinds of humidifiers. I hated the “dust” they created. Then the “dust” actually ruined my computer, gumming up the works. Last year I started using these inexpensive Vicks humidifiers and wow, a big change! No more dust. Good humidification. We have hard water here, so I’ve found that they only last about a year (probably less in a colder climate), so I look at it as planned obsolescence and I’ll just buy new ones each year. They’re inexpensive, so that’s fine with me. They aren’t pretty, but that’s ok, too. I put them in the bathrooms & kitchen, so decor isn’t as important.

Just a vaporizer like you see at local store. It is what it is. Great vaporizer Seems to do its job. This as been banged up in the truck or someplace on the way because it was not boxed or sacked. Not happy about the wrapping and the shipping on this but I had to go ahead and use it for an urgent medical issue. Not working great but it is working. Would never order again when it did not come wrapped or boxed.
