This thing is so much more effective than my last evaporative humidifier it’s not even funny. On full blast, within minutes a hygrometer in the same room showed the humidity creeping up from 12%. This can bring my whole one bedroom apartment from 10-15% up to 35% and hold it there, while the Honeywell unit had a problem getting just one room to 30%. This might be good for one floor of a smaller house, or any one room, but you may want a large whole-home unit if you want more than that. Perfect for a highrise condo/apartment though.
I think the effectiveness is down to the design. It has a good ducted fan (Vornado’s specialty) that is very effective at pulling in air / creating negative pressure inside the housing, and the two big wicks give a lot of surface area for evaporation while probably also slowing airflow just enough to help with that pressure.
It has a built-in humidistat. It seems to work OK, but you might have to manually manage it sometimes to keep it from going too high or low. It’s enough to leave it untended most of the time though.
The review saying that a cloth left on top of this stayed dry is… that’s not a reasonable way to measure a humidifier’s efficacy. Only an ultrasonic humidifier, which atomizes the water and so just acts like a continuous spray bottle, would actually have the effect of wetting that. The proper way to measure a humidifier is to use a hygrometer to measure your room’s humidity.
(Ultrasonic humidifiers throw tiny particles of water into the air, so they significantly degrade air quality unless they’re used with pure water. They’re not great. This humidifier doesn’t make a nice pretty mist effect but it also doesn’t make you breath in calcium, silicates, and other minerals)
The photo is from a cold day, humidity in here would normally be 17% at most. Clearly the humidifier works and makes the air wetter. Of course it doesn’t actually make sense to measure on top of the humidifier directly like this.

I hardly ever write reviews, but humidifiers are such a gong show to decide on.
This thing is probably overpriced for what it is – a plastic tray, 2 water tanks, a fan and a plastic fan holder. Oh and 2 wicking filters you’ll have to change once in a while.
But that’s the beauty. It’s easy to clean, it just works, it doesn’t spew white “stuff” everywhere. It’s very effective, humidity is right where I want it.
One con – it’s big, but that’s life given the water capacity.
I’ve bought 3 humidifiers this year. This is a keeper.

I bought this Jan 2022 because it has a lot of water storage capacity. Humidifier are pretty basic by design. You have a water bowel than a filter/sponge absorbers water and a fan to suck up the moisture and mystify the air blowing through it. You would think that the most important part of the unit would be designed to operated in high humidity area and have a sealed design so moisture doesn’t get into the motor/bearings internals and seize up only after 4weeks of use. Worked fine until I drained out water and turned it off. 5days later turned the switch back on and just heard a hum coming from fan motor. Tried to spin the fan blade by hand and felt resistance like internal armor/bearings is seized. Going to see if Vornando honors their 5yr warranty

We bought our first Vornado Evap40 evaporative humidifier about 3 weeks ago for the living room. It is a simple, genius design! SUPER easy to set up, to control the humidity using the humidistat knob & a hygrometer, to fill the tanks without spilling, & to control the fan!! We liked it so much we ordered a second one a few days later for the master bedroom. The owner’s manual is clear & easy to follow. Check for leaks first as instructed. Ours had none. If you’re spilling water, you are not filling and installing the simply-designed water tanks correctly. Follow the instructions! We fill the tanks at the kitchen sink, which has the highest faucet, & take them to the units in the living room or bedroom. No spills ever. Adjusting the humidity is also very easy using a hygrometer, the humidistat knob & the fan knob. Our humidity was low in the 20% range, so we let the units run on high (both humidistat & fan) for a day or so. Once the humidity increased appropriately for our comfort (about 30-43%), we adjusted the humidistat as instructed in the manual to maintain it. It stays well within this range. (“Range” is the key word. Humidity fluctuates, so don’t expect it to stay on an exact % number all the time.) I read online that the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency recommend a humidity level between 30-50% for most home use to prevent mold and mildew, but your needs may differ, of course. In our opinion, the fan noise is negligible, even on high, but we run the living room unit on medium & the bedroom on low.
Initially, I was all set to purchase an ultrasonic humidifier until I read some very concerning disadvantages. Research the difference. There are 3 previous, very informative reviews on the Evap40 that definitely influenced our decision to purchase an evaporative humidifier (instead of ultrasonic) and to purchase this model specifically. No regrets! Read these reviews by: KJAG March 2022, This Guy Dec 2022, Jerry Dec 2016.
The Evap40 uses two 1.5″ filters & there is some easy recommended maintenance for the filters & the unit. Again, all this is in the very user-friendly manual. However, after reading those 3 reviews, we purchased the Vornado 2-pack 1.5″ replacement filters to have on hand, not the 1″ filters. Now Amazon even sells the Evap40 with a 2-pack box of the 1.5″ filters as a bundle, or you can buy the unit & backup filters separately. Same price either way.
Important! Buy a hygrometer to more accurately monitor your home/room’s humidity. We bought two of the Accurite Digital Hygrometers & are very satisfied with them.
We also bought 2 of the medium Stalwart all-weather boot trays to protect the floors, just in case of a leak. They fit perfectly under the Evap40. Inexpensive & well worth it.
We like the Evap40 so well that we just purchased a smaller Vornado EV100 for a small bedroom. It arrives tomorrow & we expect it will function just a well for that smaller space.

Pros:
Very simple design and work well
Water tanks last quite long (2 days with medium hum setting)for 800 square foot room
Quiet, only on high setting then you can hear some white noise
Cons:
Time will tell on longevity

There is really no assembly. After you remove the packaging it is already assembled in the box. Because it is evaporative rather than cool mist, it does a much better job, and no risk of white deposits all over your furniture. Filling is easy, and I have been running it continuously with only the need to fill one of the two tanks daily. It preferentially depletes one tank before starting on the other. There is a fan, so there is some noise, but it’s white noise and I don’t notice it. (Same level of noise as my Honeywell air purifier.) It is twice the size of a cool mist humidifier, so it is about as big as anyone would stand for as a tabletop item. But, being evaporative, it does not need to produce a directed stream, so you can actually put it anywhere and get the health effect you need. My only (minor) issue is that the construction means that all four sides need to be about 6 to 12 inches from a wall in order to permit filling and proper air circulation without having to be constantly moving it. I love this thing.

So far I’m in love with this humidifier. I have a large output cool mist humidifier for my living room, so this one is bought specifically for my large bedroom. These are things that are not great for me, and could be a dealbreaker for some. First of all, the overnight output on low fan is not super great. It’s not bad, it kept me comfortable throughout the night, no stuffy nose due to dryness, so not really a problem for me. It’ll put out more moisture on high or medium fan speed but it’ll be noisy. Second, it makes gurgling sounds when more water is dispensed into the base. This is not a very tiny sound, especially in the middle of a quiet night. It’ll work if most sounds doesn’t bother you at night but you’ll hate it if you’re a light sleeper. I’m a light sleeper, that’s why I noticed and woke up every time it makes that sound, about 4 throughout the night. However it doesn’t bother me much because since I’m a light sleeper, my dog wakes me up in the middle of the night all the time, everyone of her tiny move wakes me up so no big deal, I don’t get grumpy and I fall right back to sleep. Choose carefully according to your sleep patterns.
Now on the good side of things. This humidifier by nature incorporates vornado’s air circulator fan, which I actually use with my other cool mist humidifiers. With this humidifier, I only turn on one unit instead of two. It can be set on the floor, unlike my other humidifiers that need a raised flat surface. Lastly, this humidifier is just so easy to disassemble and clean, no tight and small hard to reach areas, and that’s the most important thing for me when it comes to humidifier.
Coming from a long time cool mist humidifier user, I’m extremely careful when it comes to cleaning my humidifier. I don’t ever want to see any pink or black, mold or algae in my humidifier. Here’s how I maintain and clean it.
I set it up as instructed, plus adding bacteriostat into the water tanks. I pull out the water tanks after each night of use, set them aside, keep the left over water in it if there’s still a lot. Then I remove the top fan part, which is very easy, took the base to my bathroom, dump the left over water in the base, also very easy. I keep everything open and separated, let the base and wicks air dry during day time. At night before bed, I rinse the wicks, put everything back and turn it on again. Took 3 minutes of my time to do all that in the morning and another 3 minutes at night before bed. Every week I clean the water tanks and the base according to the cleaning instructions. You might need to clean them more frequently if you don’t want to use the bacteriostat water additives. I also clean the wicks using white vinegar solution weekly and change them out every month.
Yes it’s a lot of work, but the truth is keeping and maintaining a humidifier is a lot of work. Get the cool mist ones if you don’t want to spend more money on the wicks but be prepared to clean it even more.
Once again I love this humidifier, highly recommend it. It’s the only humidifier that can be cleaned this easily at this level of performance and at this price point. Also, I’m not sure why so many reviewers say that the water spills every time removing the tanks. I suggest watching some YouTube reviews to learn how to properly remove the water tanks. They never spilled.
