Product is rated for about 500sqft, but we used it to cool a 740sqft apartment for the past two summers. Temps were over 100°F in the day and in the 80’s overnight for many days, and while this unit struggled a bit, it definitely kept the space liveable! With night time temperatures even in the 70’s, this unit produces plenty of cold air. It is heavy, and it is loud. This thing sat directly behind my computer chair because of limited options to exhaust it in our space, and I could turn my Windows volume down by 20 after turning the unit off. If it’s farther away, or in another room entirely, the noise is much less of an issue. We found that fans in the room greatly increase its effectiveness. You will want multiple people to install or move this thing. Overall, I’m very pleased with its performance and glad that I bought it.
Edit: now on its third year without maintenance or repair, and we’ve moved from a ~740sqft apartment to one that’s about 1100sqft. This thing still keeps up! Again, some fans throughout to help distribute the air go a long way. One more note I will add, is mind where you plug it in. The unit can draw up to 1250W! We accidentally put it on a 10A circuit that was shared with two power hungry workstations and tripped the breaker! Still highly recommend!

All I wanted was to go from a Haier 12,000 BTU To somthing a little bigger but not too much, when I saw the Whynter came with a 3m Filter for Antimicrobial control and the fact that I could also put a Carbon filter in behind it for Odor control I was SOLD!….Now when I recieved the unit it was packaged brilliantly, upon opening you would think you now have the cadillac of air conditioners, One problem, After I waited 24 hours!! Before first start up just to make sure I was babying this thing, I put it in the same room as my 12,000BTU Haier and started it up, And was astonished at how my Haier could cool the room 3 times faster and more efficiently in weather that was not even near peak heat hours, My room is sealed with sponge tape around the door,(regular sized appt bedroom) This has an auto evaporation feature just as my Haier did, I have NEVER had to empty my Haier Unit…EVER!….yet after 7 hours of running and still not having a room close to the temperature that the Haier can achieve, I had to empty the Whynter unit. I dont want to go on forever about this but the piont is that it just doesnt cool and you WILL have to empty it, I am in Canada Ontario and It is dry here not damp, I am up on the fourth floor of an appt and the machine was still full….Big dissapointment, The only good thing was hats off to AMAZON.CA…Customer Service AMAZING!!!…They are the reason I will keep shopping Amazon, And no I dont work for them….Whynter you should size up your competition before making the Cadillac of air conditioners or you just might end up making a Bicycle….

Dislike because too noisy

I did a lot of research on this particular air conditioner. I bought two of these portable ones. They work excellent. Don’t be afraid to buy one or two like I did. They’re not cheap but worth every penny you notice from the photo I have casement windows so I had to rig away up to, evacuate the air. It works seamlessly with all of the parts included.

2nd UPDATE:2020: Still use every summer and it is still working good…so 6 years now/6 summers? I use it in a sunroom and it really helps cool that room down.
UPDATE: Updating to 4 stars; Whynter customer service has been very responsive; and I found out these come with 3 year compressor warranty, which is great. Turns out tho the air conditioner actually fixed itself, I forced it to run one day since the cooling action was working, and at the end of the day it did turn off when I hit the off button, so I have been using it this past week with no issues. Whytner thinks the compressor may have been over amping. So just waiting to hear back if I should wait it out and see if happens again or if they want to replace it or what. If this issue had not come up it I would have given it 5 stars because it really does cool great and has low noise. I like the mobility of being able to move it to different rooms if I choose.
Purchased last summer, worked great. Only been using it for about a few times this 2nd summer and suddenly something keeps running inside it even when turned off..it is like a low humming/buzzing noise. It sounds like the compressor that won’t stop running and it sounds off from its normal sound. So now it is hot and I have no air conditioner. $600 is a lot for a unit that has only been used for a couple months last year off and on, and just a month this year off and on, so not real happy with it. Waiting to hear back from Whytner; hopefully they will stand behind their product and either fix it or replace it even though it was purchased last year. I’ll update review later and either raise or lower stars depending on their product support etc.

We have central air in our home, but there are a couple of dead zones that we get almost no AC. I find it impossible to spend more than a few minutes in those rooms in the heat of Texas summer. We bought a couple of these units to provide localized AC where we need them. The dual-hose is a must for anyone buying a portable AC unit, as it separates the exhaust air from fresh air, and improves its efficiency. It’s advertised as auto-draining the condensation that is produced, but my experience has been that the water reservoir needs to be emptied out periodically. When we have consecutive days of super humid weather, this task gets to be too cumbersome. The unit has an automatic shut-off when this happens, but that defeats the purpose of having AC and not desirable if it happens in the middle of the night. So, I have placed the AC unit off the floor on a raised platform, and have a large bowl under it to catch the condensation from the unit. An alternative is to attach a hose to its exit tube and have it dump the water outside the window, but I wasn’t willing to make a hole in the meshed screens for that. It uses a lot of electricity; so one has to be prudent about how long it runs for. It should be on a dedicated circuit, with no other heavy amp appliances sharing that circuit. The filter is easy to take out and clean. It’s a must-have for us on hot humid summer days. Repeat buyer.

This A/C unit’s condensation reservoir barely ever needs to be drained. The remote is handy and the unit definitely puts out a lot of cool air.
