The Mr. Cool 18K mini split is an excellent choice for those looking for a reliable and efficient cooling solution. The value it offers is outstanding, providing high performance at a reasonable price. Installation is straightforward, making it accessible even for those with minimal DIY experience. Once set up, the unit operates smoothly, delivering consistent cooling and heating with impressive energy efficiency. It’s a great option for anyone needing a user-friendly and cost-effective mini split system.

I bought this purely because of DIY (pre-charged freon). I have installed splits before but have to pay few hundred to have a tech come and charge the unit.
Install directions were great, very easy to install, everything you need, although no line cover for exterior. Had entire thing installed start to finish including running electrical from power pole in less than 2 hours. Then I went in, powered it on and it started doing its thing, I was thinking wow this is great. I run the test function and while I am waiting the 30 mins it says to wait I go back outside to clean up. This is where I knew something was wrong, the outdoor unit is not running! I go back inside to make sure I didn’t do something wrong and I see I have an error code. Says I have a communication error. I look it up and it says start with wires. I check everything, all labeled, all correct. I get out the voltage meter and everything checks out. Of course it’s a weekend and Mr Cool is closed. So Monday morning I call, sat on hold for 10 minutes, it tells me as I am working up through the queue, then it connects… to a VOICEMAIL!! I waited 10 mins on hold to leave a message?!?! I am easy going guy, maybe a mistake, so after I leave a message I call back. This time 13 mins, same advance through the queue, connects to a voicemail AGAIN!!!! I am being persistent because this is a rental and my tenants are without AC in summer South Carolina. So now it’s about 9am my time so I go ahead and use the online issue request through email and try the phone 1 more time, same result.
I wait until 4 in the afternoon and never get anything back, 7 hours later. I figure lets try one more time. Work through the queue and OMG, they answer! I tell her what’s wrong, she is nice and apologizes and starts giving me directions without even getting the model #!?! After the 3rd direction to check I cut her off and told her I don’t have that wire, maybe if I give you the model # you can help me better. At this time she gets it and emails the troubleshoot guide. I live 30 mins away, its late in the day so I have to go tomorrow, but I ask, if this is the problem (circuit board which I assume it is) how long does it usually take? Her response was well usually only a week or two!!!! Are you kidding me, I got the unit in 4 days after I ordered, tenets understand, I understand, but now I have a brand new unit that doesn’t work and its going to take 2 weeks to get the correct part!?!?
Wow… I really like the product, I love that its true DIY with pre-charged lines, but customer service is just plain awful! They are really going to have to work to earn a second purchase.

Install was a bit involved but nothing too difficult. The app and remote work pretty well, temperature control is a bit difficult (setpoint seems like more of a suggestion that what the temp should be). But cools REALLY well! Would buy again.
Looks nice
Really quiet
Moderate install difficulty
Very effective

We couldn’t have waited this long. Heats and cools. Runs on our 48 volt off grid solar system with great performance overnight on battery consumption = Very little! Great product and installation was a breeze.

What a joy to have AC in the shop. It was an easy install. I bought a wall mount kit and a line set cover in addition to the unit. I hung the inside unit and the outside unit. I then ran a conduit to a disconnect box and I made a whip to connect the compressor to the disconnect box that took a couple hours. Once I had the wires pulled and connected, I connected the lines together. Then I opened the valves and finished the outside work. I switched the breaker on and it came to life. Very quiet and cools down the room quickly… About 4 hours total once everything was gathered together and laid out… Very important to lay everything out and understand the process….

This is the second MrCool DIY unit I have installed and they have both been pretty easy for a knowledgeable DIY person. A couple of things that I have learned from the first install helped me greatly on the second.
Follow the directions closely and read the entire install manual before starting anything (trust me).
Make sure to have a helper for the heavy lifting it makes life a lot easier.
I bought a mini split line set cover kit off amazon ($30) because the line set is facing the street and I wanted to protect and cleanup the look as well.
I poured a small concrete pad using 2x4s as a frame (17”x30”). It required roughly 3 bags of concrete. Might be overkill but I let it cure for a week before using ¼” concrete wedge anchors to secure the unit to the pad. The dimensions of this pad fit the 9k BTU heat pump very well.
My house has cement block which I thought was going to be tough to drill through but it wasn’t. The key here is to buy a concrete hole saw. I bought mine on amazon for about $20. It drilled right through the wall with my corded hammer drill and light force. If you push too hard the bit will dull quickly. Let the tools do the work.
I found the drain line to be a little short so I bought a mini split drain hose extension ahead of the install. (You may not need this but I installed mine high on the wall)
You should get a licensed electrician to install the unit. However, the wiring is straightforward.
Lastly, the MrCool system is great. The condenser is roughly 4 feet from my bedroom and I cannot hear it running at all. The inside unit is not noisy and the constant air movement (I have mine set to fan ON) helps me sleep while keeping the room at the perfect temperature. The efficiency of the unit has been quite surprising as my electricity bill has reduced compared to this time last year. We no longer cool\heat the entire house to keep our bedroom perfect. The MrCool app works pretty well too. I wish it had an auto off for the LED at night.
I hope this helps you. I wish someone had told me some of these things before my first install.
