This review is for the Vornado EV3 (in progress).
As a long time owner of various Vornado products (660 Air circulator and Evap3 humidifier), I was interested in a newer version for our daughter’s room to replace the ultrasonic one we had been using.
Wick-based humidifiers, in general, work better to gradually increase the humidity of a room, vs dumping humidified mist into a targeted area, hoping it will distribute and even out the room. They also generally deal better with imperfect water quality than ultrasonic (ultrasonic will punish you by sending hard water contaminants everywhere – not just build up in the humidifier). They’re also much more likely to trigger a false alarm with a smoke alarm.
That said, the Evap3 I’ve used for the past decade has a few flaws. It’s fairly loud and only has two speeds (low or high) – low being passible to sleep with, high being a non-starter. As water is consumed, it also makes loud glug-glug sounds as water transfer from the tank into the tray that the wick filters draw from.
Unfortunately, at the time of receiving this unit, use of a humidifier isn’t warranted so I’ll be updating this review during winter but I did do some power and subjective noise measurements-
Power consumption of Low on the EV3 is anywhere from 2-3W (which ranges from level 1-4). At max speed, power consumption measured at 12W. By comparison, the Evap3 measured at 23W low, 45W at high. Noise levels are significantly lower across the board, both in low and high.
On my Evap3, I’ve taped over all of the places where the blue LEDs shine. On the EV3, it appears the LCD display starts off as bright white, and then dims. It would be nice if it could optionally darken to near imperceptibility but it’s still better than intensely blue LED lights.
The EV3 blasts humidified air horizontally instead of vertically like the Evap3. A quick search suggests that humidified air rises instead of falls, so inevitably the horizontal push plus rise effect helps circulate humidified air better than Evap3’s vertical approach.
Time will tell this winter season but I’m optimistic. Glad that this thing uses a commonly available wick filter size (MD1-0001 or MD1-0002) and the same one I use with Evap3 – which you can buy Vornado branded or third party, allowing me to double up.

I’ve tried many humidifiers over the years to keep my guitars in a safe humidity range year-round. All of my previous units were ultrasonic, so this was a departure.
Since there is no visible water vapor when the unit is running, I wasn’t sure at first it was working. But my room hygrometers showed increasing humidity after an hour or so (it’s a large, open room). The big downside, of course, is the louder fan compared to nearly silent ultrasonic humidifiers.
One reviewer mentioned the very fine white residue and claimed these evaporative units don’t do that due to the wick-style filters. That will be interesting to see. Everything in my house gets coated with fine white powder when using the ultrasonic units due to the hard water in our area. I’m not convinced this unit will be any different since the filters are on the air intake, but time will tell.
The automatic mode seems to be good at maintaining a set humidity, but it will not increase the fan speed, only decrease it from the set value as it nears the target humidity.

On day one I unboxed the unit and tested the basin for leaks with no issues. On day two I came home to over a gallon of water soaked into the carpet and subfloor of my second story music studio. Don’t do it. Beyond frustrated.

Vornado EV3 Whole Room Evaporative Humidifier – This arrived just when we needed it. Someone at home was sick, so we set it up in a bedroom with distilled water.
Set to 60%, it’s been maintaining that level without any trouble, at least during summer. The fan’s got 10 settings – 10 is pretty loud, but 5 is barely noticeable.
I like that it doesn’t have bright LEDs and the water tank size is on the large size. This is the type that uses wicks for evaporation. It comes with two, and has a place to use them both at the same time.

I love my Vornado fan, so when I saw they had a humidifier, I was keen to try it. Granted, it’s still warm weather and a but humid here, so now is not the optimal time to review its performance. So, for now suffice it to say, it seems like a winner. It’s super easy to fill and change filters. It’s a solid structure in a nice charcoal color that make it more aesthetic than our previous white plastic eyesore, and the sound it makes is constant and soothing like a white noise machine. It’s easy to set with several levels of fan power to choose from and what comes out feels substantial, moist and cooling. I am optimistic that once we put the heat on ans things get dry, it will do the job far more effectively than our last dehumifier of a similar size. However, if that’s not the case, I’ll report back with an update.
